as required by the state of New Jersey. Each year these mandates must be fulfilled. The more contact you have with students,
the more mandates are imposed on the employee of the district and proof is needed for monitoring purposes. Please look over the programs listed below and if you have not completed any of these programs, please log on to the district website as noted below.
All Programs (except where indicated by individual/at in-service) are available to you via our district website,
simply by logging on to http://www.barnegatschools.com/.

The Suicide Prevention workshop is available to you online simply by logging onto NJEA and signing up for the required two hour session. You will receive a certificate indicating the completion of the course; also, please send a copy of the certificate to your building counselor/principal as indicated above. This mandate is required every five years and has to be performed by a state approved provider (which NJEA is). All new staff must complete suicide prevention. If you have any questions regarding this notice, please contact Lou Balka or your union rep for further information. Please be sure to take care of all mandates prior to October 1st. If requirements have not been completed by this date, your building supervisor will be in touch. Affirmative Action Program for School and Classroom Practices -> Click here to view the Sexual Harassment Video 20 U.S.C.A. 1701 N.J.S.A. 18A:36-20 N.J.A.C. 6:4-1.3(b) --> Click here to view related forms Parent(s) or legal guardian (s), pupils, staff members, and members of the public shall be informed annually about the district’s affirmative action plan for school and classroom practices, the designation of the Affirmative Action Officer, and the procedure by which an affirmative action complaint may be filed and processed. The Affirmative Action Officer shall report as required to the Board on progress made in the affirmative action program for school and classroom practices. The Board will annually review district progress toward the objectives of any state-approved affirmative action plan.
Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Prevention and Intervention -> Click here to view the video on Drugs and Alcohol
N.J.S.A. 18A:40A-3 and 15 and N.J.A.C. 6A:16-3.1(a)4 Each district board of education shall ensure that all educational staff members receive in-service training in alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse prevention and intervention according to the requirements of N.J.S.A. 18A:40A-3 and 15. The in-service training shall be updated annually in order to ensure educational staff members have the most current information available on the subject of substance abuse and the district’s comprehensive alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse programs, policies and procedures. Under N.J.S.A. 18A:40-12.9, the commissioner must assure that annual training opportunity on asthma be provided to the school physician and all teaching staff. NJDOE with NJ Asthma Coalition produced video to support this requirement. Copies were sent to all NJ schools by the coalition. This is not yet reflected in NJDOE regulations.
Federal OSHA rules (29 CFR 1910.1030) and NJ law under PEOSH (NJSA34:6A-25 et seq.) Districts must provide annual training of staff who have been designated as at-risk of exposure under the school district’s Expose Control Plan. Schools must also identify students at risk of exposure due to occupational training programs and provide equivalent training per N.J.A.C.6A:19-10.9. The school nurse must be trained in airway management, use of nebulizers and inhalers. Other school employees may administer epi-pen, only if properly trained in the administration of the epi-pen by the school nurse using standardized training protocols established by NJDOE. Gang Activity and Student Involvement in Gangs -> Click here to view the Violence in Schools Video S-1748 All public school administrators are required to attend an annual seminar developed by the Office of the Attorney General on the topic of gangs and gang activity. N.J.S.A. 18A:37-17 Districts are only required to provide training on the school district’s harassment, intimidation and bullying policies to school employees and volunteers who have significant contact with students to the extent funds are appropriated for these purposes. However, districts are required to incorporate into a school’s employee training program information regarding the school district’s policy against harassment, intimidation and bullying. Hazardous Communications Standards/Right–to–Know -> Workshops provided by Workshop Provided at designated locations. N.J.S.A. 34:5A New Jersey Worker and Community Right to Know Act required public and private employers to provide information about hazardous substance at their workplace and how to work with these hazardous substances safely.

N.J.A.C. 6A:16-7.2(a) 4 and 5 --> Click here to view related PDF forms The functions of the system of intervention and referral services in each school building shall be to provide support, guidance, and professional development to school staff who identify learning, behavior, and health difficulties, and provide support, guidance, and professional development to school staff who participate in each building’s system for planning and providing intervention and referral services. Each school building has established an Intervention and Referral Service plan designed to assist students who are experiencing learning, behavior and or health difficulties. The plan involves a coordinated effort on behalf of teachers, parents, counselors, administrators and any other pertinent party to identify and assess student needs. The information collected is then used to implement an action plan consisting of appropriate services in order to help students succeed academically, socially and physiologically Intervention and Referral Services http://www.state.nj.us/education/students/irs/appendd.pdf The "Intervention and Referral Services: Implementing Building-based Problem Solving Teams (N.J.A.C. 6A:16-7)," is designed to provide school district and building staff with an orientation to the building-based problem-solving functions required under the Intervention and Referral Services regulations. N.J.A.C. 6A:16-6.2 (b) 11 -> This was incorporated into the Gang Safety Program provided to school staff. Provisions for the in-service training of school staff concerning policies and procedures established in the subchapter on law enforcement operations for substances, weapons and safety (N.J.A.C. 6A:16-6), and the exchange of information regarding the practices of the education and law enforcement agencies.
